November 3rd, 2006

sangha daySangha Day is the second most important Buddhist festival. It is a celebration in honour of the Sangha, or the Buddhist community. This festival is also known as Fourfold Assembly or Magha Puja Day, as the original assembly encompassed four events…

* All 1,250 disciples were enlightened saints, or Arahats.
* All 1,250 saints were ordained by Buddha.
* The disciples congregated spontaneously.
* The sermon occurred on the March Full Moon.

Buddha gave a sermon to this gathering in which he laid down the rules of monastic conduct for monks and nuns. The rules given in the sermon would form the basis of the Vinaya Pitaka Scriptures.
